GUIDE TO RENTING A CAR IN EUROPE
RENTAL CYCLES
Prices are calculated on a 24-hour basis. If your drop-off time is later than your pick-up time, you may be charged for an extra day. All rental charges are based on 24-hour cycles, calculated from the moment the rental agreement has been completed. A rental from Monday, 12:00 Noon to Tuesday, 12:00 Noon would therefore represent one rental day. For rentals exceeding the 24 hour rental period, renters are usually offered a 59 minute grace period after which overtime charges will apply.
Think small. Fuel is expensive in Europe, streets are narrow in many cities, and small cars are easier to park than large ones. Unless you need a large car or van, stick with a small to midsize car.
AGE REQUIREMENT
In most countries, the minimum age for the renter and all additional drivers is 21 years, for some car classes premium cars it may be higher. Some countries also have a maximum age limit. The minimum age requirement applies to the renter as well as any additional drivers.
DRIVER LICENSE AND MAJOR CREDIT CARD
Renters have to meet the minimum age requirement and be in in possession of a valid driver's license. Many countries require that the renter will have the license for a minimum period of one year. In most countries. an international driver's license is not required, however, it may be useful when traveling into remote areas since it serves as a translation of the domestic driver's license.
In almost all cases a "major" credit card (e.g. American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard, Visa) will be required to rent a car, and has to be shown at the time of pick-up. The credit card will have to be in the name of the renter. A third party card (such as a parent's credit card) will not be accepted. | |
